“He will forever be the is the “WHY” behind the work that I do!”

It all started when I gave birth to a baby boy too soon…

But wait — let me back up a bit.

Before I was a mother, I was already making a difference. I was a clinician. I had spent years supporting children, families, mothers, and communities who were often carrying more than people could see. I understood trauma. I understood systems. I understood advocacy. I knew how to sit with people in hard moments and help them find language for what they were living through.

Or at least, I thought I did.

Because then I became the one in the hospital bed. I became the mother trying to make sense of medical updates, fear, grief, hope, and survival all at the same time. I became the person needing the same care, support, and advocacy I had spent years helping other people access.

And that experience changed me.

I learned very quickly that being educated does not shield you from being dismissed. Being a clinician does not shield you from bias. Knowing the language does not always mean people will listen when you speak.

That is one of the hardest truths about inequity in maternal care. Black women and other women of color are not experiencing worse outcomes because we are not trying hard enough, speaking up enough, or making the right choices. We are experiencing worse outcomes inside systems where implicit bias, structural racism, unequal access, and all the “isms” still shape the quality of care people receive.

And the numbers tell the same story. In 2024, Black women in the United States had a maternal mortality rate of 44.8 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared with 14.2 for White women, 12.1 for Hispanic women, and 18.1 for Asian women. The preterm birth crisis follows a similar pattern. The 2025 March of Dimes Report Card reported that the U.S. preterm birth rate was 10.4% in 2024, while babies born to Black moms and birthing people had a preterm birth rate of 14.7%, nearly 1.5 times higher than the rate for babies overall.

So when I talk about this work, I am not only talking about data.

I am talking about women who are trying to be heard.
I am talking about babies who are fighting to live.
I am talking about families who are navigating systems that do not always see the fullness of who they are.

And one of those babies was mine.

This is why consultation is part of my work. I help organizations, programs, and leaders look more honestly at the systems they have built, the families they serve, and the gaps they may not realize exist.
